The Inner Demon [Poem]

Within the core of every one,
no matter how pure, brave, or bright,
there lurks a secret demon,
who wholly resents the light.

Passionately ignorant,
It's greed spoils every pleasure.
Narcissistic, devious,
and craving power beyond measure.

More cold-blooded than any snake,
ugly as a plague-bearing rat,
murderous like a mad dog.
No beast is as wretched as that.

Who dares to battle this monster,
risks falling to its cleverest lie:
that it can ever be fully vanquished.
Truly, Evil within us will never die.

Ever en garde to our dying day,
against this vile shadow so fierce!
How shall we be equipped for war,
what blade will his subtle skin pierce?

Temperance, justice, and courage
Armed with wisdom’s traditional virtue
The demon can be kept at bay,
If you hold to them strong and true.

But in this war if you aren’t on the offensive,
The demon will strike a blow swift and lethal.
This creature is more ancient than the stars,
cruel as black ice, and from realms ethereal.

Only with meditation, prayer, and sacrifice
done with steadfast, sincere and zealous faith
can your soul have enough power and light
to put to rout this mad bloodthirsty wraith.

Your every hour, thought, word, and deed,
is a battlefield between good and sin.
Raging even into our innermost heart
We aren’t alive without this war within.

Stay determined! Stay faithful! Have hope!
Steel up for yet more spiritual combat your will,
and let this be encouragement for you:
We gain the strength of the inner demon we kill.
